Born of a wealthy family, Nicholas was brought up as a devout Christian. When his parents died of an epidemic, he distributed his wealth among the poor and became a priest. Later he became Archbishop of Myra, and it is from here that the fame of his good deeds began to spread across the Mediterranean.
Sinterklaas (also called Sint-Nicolaas or De Goedheiligman in Dutch and Saint Nicolas in French) is a traditional holiday figure in the Netherlands, Aruba, Netherlands Antilles, and Belgium, celebrated every year on Saint Nicholas' eve, December 5. Saint Nicholas' Eve (December 5th) is the chief occasion for gift-giving. Traditionally, before going to bed children put their shoes with a carrot and some hay in it and a bowl of water for Sinterklaas's horse.
Saint-Nicolas traditionally rides a white horse. This horse goes by the name "Amerigo", and our task here was to decorate our shoe's, and set it with food for Amerigo!
