Spiritual change requires discipline

In the world in which we live we give the most attention to satisfying the appetites of the body but little attention to the appetites of the soul. Consequently we become fat physically and materially, while spiritually we are weak and anemic.
The soul, created in the image of God, cannot be fully satisfied until it knows God in the proper way. Only God can resolve the deepest longings, desires and appetites of the soul. The soul demands fellowship and communion with God. It demands worship, quietness and meditation on God’s Word. Unless the soul is fed and exercised daily, it becomes weak and shriveled. It becomes discontented, confused, restless. We need to realize our spiritual poverty. Wise is the person who openly confesses his lack of spiritual wealth and in humility of heart cries, ‘God be merciful to me a sinner’ ~ Luke 18:13 ~
In God’s economy emptying comes before filling, confession before forgiveness and poverty before riches.

Prayer:
Lord, we thank You for spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible reading, worship and fasting. However, sometimes we fail to make these disciplines a part of our lives. Please forgive us for neglecting the appetites of our souls. Help us to take time for communion with You, so that we may grow to be more like Jesus each day. We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
